Georgia Civil Air Patrol Suspends Non-Emergency Activities Due to Coronavirus

ATLANTA – Civil Air Patrol’s Georgia Wing is expanding its suspension of meetings and activities to encompass the entire state as more cases of COVID-19, also known as the coronavirus, have been diagnosed in areas near the wing’s squadrons.

Colonel Jeffrey Garrett is Georgia Wing’s Commander. “This was not an easy decision to make,” said Garrett, announcing the suspension to members via email Thursday evening. He cited the importance that members’ health plays in the missions Civil Air Patrol conducts in Georgia’s communities. The suspension is anticipated to remain in effect until April 1.

No Georgia Wing members are currently known to have contracted COVID-19. If any members are suspected or confirmed to have been exposed to the coronavirus, they should immediately contact the Georgia Wing Director of Safety, Maj. Bill Stieglitz, at 770-428-9031 x201.

This preventative action applies only to nonessential in-person meetings and activities. Squadrons may still conduct online meetings and activities to keep up participation. While training missions and exercises are canceled, Civil Air Patrol’s emergency services teams are still operational and will continue to respond to disaster relief and search and rescue missions as needed.
